Recognizing the need to provide additional space for the growing number of student organizations on campus, we worked with UCLA to develop a plan that would transform the University’s 103,000-square-foot historic 1931 Men’s Gymnasium, designed by George W. Kelham, into a new student services building. The design features a series of vibrant spaces for student clubs, meetings and group study, using color and textured materials to give the building’s interior a contemporary look and feel while preserving the architectural character both inside and out. A new two-story entry provides both accessibility to the lower floor as well as making this level highly visible and inviting. New exterior lighting of the facade makes the building particularly prominent within the campus’ historic core, increasing the visibility of student organizations and underlining their importance.
