—Orange, CA—Chapman University’s Musco Center for the Arts, is featured in the just published “Concert Halls by Nagata Acoustics: Thirty Years of Acoustical Design for Music Venues and Vineyard-Style Auditoria,” by Yasuhisa Toyota, Motoo Komoda, Daniel Beckmann, Marc Quiquerez and Eric Bergal, and published ASA Press. As the design inspiration for the multipurpose hall was the “ragnaia,” a secret Roman garden, the design team devised large bronze acanthus-leaf-shaped panels to provide the articulated diffusion that Yasuhisa required to achieve the hall’s superior acoustics, and to create the hall’s distinctive look. The book provides acoustical metrics along with a meta-analysis on the usefulness of such metrics in the design process. Musco Center was awarded the 2018 Architizer A+ Jury Award and a 2017 United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) Merit Award.
