Brentwood School is one of the pre-eminent independent K-12 schools in Los Angeles, offering traditional college preparatory education for students grades 9-12. As part of an overall 30-year master plan effort to expand the East Campus to incorporate grades 6-8, the school engaged Pfeiffer to design the first phase facilities, which included a new middle school, parking garage and athletics field. Inspired by the early 1930’s structures inherited by the School, the new building is a blend of both traditional and contemporary design. It’s naturally ventilated entry way, circulation “spark” and multiple terraces, combined with roll up doors from dining to the outdoors, celebrate the mild southern California climate while demonstrating the School’s commitment to sustainability.

The new building accommodates 375 students with 78,000 gsf of new construction and a new athletic field, beneath which is 102,000 sf of subterranean parking, enhanced by an activity spine with spaces for outdoor dining and casual group seating. Positioned on a highly visible corner of the School’s architecturally cohesive, inward facing urban campus, the new Middle School Complex creates a welcoming new front door expressed by a new entry and drop-off area.
