Rio Hondo Community College
Campus Master Plan
Whittier, California
Working closely with campus-wide administrators, faculty and students, we developed a long range vision for the future of Rio Hondo Community College, designed to respond to the projected growth in enrollment over the next ten years. Key elements of the plan included the siting of a Learning Resource Center/Library; Student Center; Administration of Justice center; and two new academic buildings, as well as the incorporation of new technologies, upgrading building systems and code improvements; location of proposed parking garages and a new perimeter entry road with turn-arounds and drop-offs. The plan and its associated design guidelines address building locations, setbacks, massing, architectural features, building materials, color palette, landscape material, exterior lighting and signage, transforming the campus as it implements over $300 million in bond-funded improvements. We also developed a detailed phasing plan illustrating how changes can be made incrementally while minimizing disruption to ongoing activities.
