Library Commons

Springfield, Illinois

The new Library Commons reflects the University of Illinois Springfield’s commitment to providing a uniquely high-touch, student-centered educational experience. An integrated learning environment where spaces and services serve as pathways to opportunities, the Commons’ focus is on preparing students for success in their studies and careers. It will be an impactful facility that contributes to a greater and more synergistic student experience by offering a mix of collaborative settings, hands-on workspaces for hi- and low-tech experiments, and technology-rich spaces that enhance digital literacy and data engagement.
The Library Commons is the new home for library resources, spaces, and expertise, as well as several student-facing academic and support units and a host of instructional spaces of various sizes that will foster a stronger sense of a learning community and contribute to a unique learning experience and learner success.
The ascending spiral, representing a student’s educational journey and the process of discovery, is the basis of the Library Commons’ outward appearance, as well as its internal organization.

Model of the spiral, which begins at the welcoming entrance, wraps around the building, and terminates at a high-ceilinged, celebratory reading room at the third floor – encouraging students to discover the building’s services as they ascend the spiral. The geometry of this exterior form is anchored to the campus itself, with affinity to the colonnade and to the Student Union.
